The
Kingdom Nail Holloway
The Kingdom Kerry Gaels met old rivals Holloway Gaels in
the first round of the Junior Championship at Greenford
on Sunday. Holloway entered this game as firm favourites
having beaten the Kingdom Kerry Gaels Ladies on two previous
outings this year. However Alan Bailey had been putting
the ladies through their paces in the weeks preceding the
fixture and they were planning an upset.
The Kingdom Kerry Gaels had the
better start and from the whistle dominated play in all
areas of the field. The half time score was 1-7 to Holloways
0-3 . The Kingdom Kerry Gaels scorers were Sarah Kelly 0-2,
Lisa Woods 1-2, Eimer McGrath 0-2 and Emma Linnane 0-1.
In the second half Holloway played
with a strong breeze and piled the pressure on the Kingdom
Kerry Gaels whose defence was outstanding and despite the
pressure only managed to concede 0-2. The goalkeeper, Aine
Cullen, was forced to make some fine saves in this second
half and undoubtedly kept the team in the game. Emma Linnane
got the Kingdoms only score of the second half bringing
their total to 1-8 against Holloways 0-5.
This was an excellent display of
ladies football with a fine team performance and some outstanding
individual performances. It is difficult to single out individuals
in this game as each of the team (including their manager)
did the job laid down for them, however Aine Cullen in goal,
Clodagh Gallagher in defence, Sarah Kelly and Roisin O Neill
in mid field and forwards Lisa Woods and Emma Linnane caught
the eye of spectators.
Kingdom Kerry Gaels now meet Heston
on 29th July 2001, ahead of their final in October.
Training is on Mondays and Wednesdays
at 7.30pm.
